Weather: Where Does The Weather Data Originate For A Location? (Weather Station Locations)

Modified on Wed, 20 Oct 2021 at 11:30 AM

The Storm Shield app uses weather data and alerts provided by the National Weather Service of the United States.

The National Weather Service receives data from NWS automated stations as well as COOP stations and maintains the index of the stations referenced - these can change and Storm Shield does not maintain a separate inventory of stations with the inherent risk of error.

Sometimes topographic features may have a major impact on the weather actually experienced at a location that does not match the nearest weather station. In such a case, we would suggest setting one of the "Saved Locations" close to a known weather station with similar weather.

You can find the different locations of NWS Automated and COOP weather stations here.

The Storm Shield app is designed to be as responsive as we can make it to ensure accurate Alert-delivery to mobile devices. As a result, details and information available from other common and "primary" sources are omitted from the app, but are referenced and/or linked here in the FAQs.
